Find out why buying a cheap printer could sometimes prove a false economy, and how you can pick a printer that’s a bargain in both the short and long term.

Canon Pixma G1510 – was £135.99, now £108.79 (20% off)
We liked: Very low running costs, good photo and colour print quality
We didn’t like: No automatic double-sided printing, mediocre black text quality, doesn’t copy or scan
The Canon Pixma G1510 is a basic model in the G series of tank printers. These have small tanks which filled up with bottles of ink, instead of traditional cartridges. It doesn’t copy and scan, so it’s only suited for those who just want to print – and print quality does vary.
When we tested this model, we thought it was a bit expensive given the limited features, but with such low running costs it effectively pays for itself. Seeing as it now has a pretty decent 20% discount, it’s now affordable to buy, as well as run.
