How to Shazam Songs from iPhone or iPad Control Center

You can Shazam (or identify) songs directly from your iPhone or iPad Control Center with a tap of a button. Here's how you can do it.

iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 Lets You Shazam Songs Directly from Control Center, Here's How to Use it

It's been a couple of years since Apple acquired the music recognition service Shazam. Slowly and steadily, we are seeing the service being integrated into iOS and iPadOS, for the good of consumers, obviously.

With the release of iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2, you can now identify tunes playing around you straight from the Control Center. You don't have to ask Siri, you don't have to launch the Shazam app (free, by the way). It just works like, dare I say, magic.

The feature doesn't work out of the box, however. You first have to make sure that the Shazam button is added to the Control Center, which is a one-time process, and you should have iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 installed on your compatible iPhone and iPad. If you do, then follow the steps outlined below on how to add the Shazam button to Control Center first.

Add Music Recognition Button to Control Center

  • Launch Settings
  • Tap on Control Center
  • Under the More Controls section, find Music Recognition
  • Tap on the little + button next to it
  • You're done

Enable 'Music Recognition' for Control Center

Shazam and Identify Songs from Control Center

From here, everything is pretty straightforward. If you hear a song playing around you, follow the steps outlined below:

Step 1. Bring up the Control Center.

Step 2. Tap on the Shazam button.

Step 3. Once the song is identified, it will appear as a notification.

Step 4. Tap on the notification and it will show you more details about the song. You can add the song to your Apple Music library from here as well.

Identify songs using Shazam straight from Control Center

Conclusion

I've been using the feature since it launched, and it is really quite handy. It saves you a lot of time compared to launching the Shazam app or even asking Siri to to identity a playing song. Just bring up Control Center, tap a button and you are done.

I wish there was a way to keep the feature turned on indefinitely. Sure, it would have an impact on battery life since your iPhone and iPad is constantly listening in on what's happening around you. But, imagine coming home to a list of songs that were playing around you and you didn't have to lift a finger for it either.

Sounds like something Android has already done, isn't it?
