Baileys vs Aldi vs Lidl Irish Cream Liqueur: Which did our tasters prefer?

Baileys Irish Cream liqueur is a classic Christmas tipple, ideal for creating creamy cocktails or adding to coffee for a boozy winter warmer.

If you’re looking to save some money this year, you might be considering trying a cheaper supermarket own label Irish cream liqueur.

To find out how Aldi and Lidl Irish cream liqueurs compare to Baileys, we asked 100 consumers to blind-taste and rate the taste, texture, appearance and aroma of each one.

Baileys just edged ahead, but not by much, with both the Aldi and Lidl liqueurs proving a strong match.

Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur, £15 (70cl)

Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur

36% of our tasters said they preferred Baileys over the Aldi and Lidl liqueurs. It scored 76% overall, gaining good marks across the board for its satisfying flavour and texture. Its appearance was rated better than both the Aldi and Lidl drinks.

Baileys typically costs £15 for a 70cl bottle, but it’s currently on offer at several supermarkets – so you might still be able to save some money if you don’t have an Aldi or Lidl nearby.

At the time of writing, the cheapest supermarket price we’ve found it for is £10 at Asda, Ocado and for Clubcard members at Tesco.

Aldi Specially Selected Irish Cream Deluxe Liqueur, £6.99 (70cl)

Aldi’s Irish cream liqueur impressed our tasters, with the same proportion (36%) choosing it as their preferred drink.

Although it’s lighter in colour than Baileys, the flavour is just as good and it scored 74% overall.

Priced at £6.99 for 70cl, it costs less than half the price of Baileys, so it’s well worth considering if you shop in Aldi.

Available from Aldi.

Lidl Deluxe Irish Cream Liqueur, £6.99 (70cl)

Lidl Deluxe Irish Cream Liqueur

If you’re after a budget cream liqueur, you can’t go far wrong with Lid’s offering, which was favoured by 28% of tasters and received a decent overall score of 71%.

Most of our tasters thought the sweetness and creaminess were just right, although some weren’t fans of the thinner texture. The colour was also darker than the Baileys and Aldi liqueurs.

It costs the same as Aldi’s version (£6.99 for 70cl), making it a great value alternative to Baileys.

Available from Lidl stores only.
