Recycled paper and bamboo toilet tissue subscriptions might have popped up on your radar when many of us were left scrambling for alternatives to the normal virgin pulp rolls, which quickly sold out due to panic-buying at the start of the pandemic.
These toilet roll companies are fairly new, with slick marketing campaigns promoting their green credentials, appealing to those concerned about their impact on the environment and wanting the convenience of having a bulky purchase delivered directly to their door.
We took a look at four of the most popular ones – Who Gives a Crap, Bumboo, The Cheeky Panda and The Naked Sprout – to see what they offer and whether it’s worth paying more for recycled and bamboo toilet paper subscription services.
Who Gives a Crap
Who Gives a Crap (WGAC) offers recycled and bamboo toilet paper subscriptions and one time purchase options. There’s free delivery and it donates 50% of its profits to help build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world.
Whether you opt for 24 or 48 rolls, each is individually wrapped in recycled paper, so if minimising waste is paramount you may want to consider another option. All packaging is plastic-free though.
A one-time purchase of 24 bamboo paper rolls costs £26, while 24 rolls of recycled toilet paper is £24. Delivery is free, and you can make a saving if you take up its subscription service.
Bumboo
Buy One Plant One’ is one of Bumboo’s pledges and it’s committed to planting a tree for every box of bamboo toilet paper sold. The company is partnered with the Eden Reforestation Projects, a charity that works to reduce extreme poverty within communities affected by the impact of deforestation.
Bumboo offers the choice of having the rolls individually wrapped or not. It’s £21.50 for a one-off purchase of 24 unwrapped rolls (£22.50 with wrapping); 48-roll boxes are also available.
Opting for the subscription service will save you 5%. All packaging is plastic-free and there’s no charge for delivery in the UK.

The Cheeky Panda
The Cheeky Panda sells bamboo toilet paper and a one-time buy of a box of 24 rolls will cost £19.99. Opting for the subscription service will save you 5%.
As well as its standard 24 and 48-roll options, it also offers packs of four rolls (£2.99), great for those not looking to bulk buy or just keen to give bamboo paper a try before committing to a big purchase.
None of the rolls are individually wrapped, in an effort to cut back on packaging, but you will have to pay a shipping fee for one-time purchases.
There’s free shipping on subscriptions though, and the company makes donations to conservation charity The World Land Trust.
Naked Sprout Bamboo Toilet Paper
Naked Sprout claims to sell ‘the most environmentally friendly toilet rolls available in Britain’. Unlike the others featured, it’s loo rolls are 100% free of chemicals and bleach, so if a completely stripped-back product is what you’re after these could be ideal.
Also unlike its rivals, it offers a 96-roll option, letting you further reduce your carbon footprint while saving a few pounds in the process.
A one-off purchase of 24 rolls costs £23.50 and delivery is free on all orders.
The brand has also partnered with charity Just a Drop, which supports sustainable clean water projects in 30 developing countries.
