Is Your M1 MacBook Air or MacBook Pro Overheating? Give these Fixes a Shot

Having a laptop heat up, regardless of what sort of chip inside it, is not uncommon. There can be a wide variety of reasons. And if you have an M1 MacBook Pro or MacBook Air playing all sorts of crazy on you, then follow the steps below to fix overheating issues, if you are having any.

Begin with a Restart

There is a high chance that your notebook has been powered on for quite a while - maybe even weeks. Click on the Apple logo in the menu bar and then click on Restart. Make sure you have saved your work before you do this.

Make Sure You are Running M1 Compatible Apps

An app that is not optimized for Apple Silicon may cause troubles, with overheating being one of the issues. Simply close the Intel based apps and see if anything has improved.

In order to find out if any Intel apps are running in the background, follow the tutorial here.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

Poor ventilation can cause overheating issues. The M1 might be known to sustain workloads without a fan but it does not mean it can do so forever. Ensure that you are using your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro on a surface that is flat and has good airflow.

Build-up of dust may also cause overheating. It is best to take your notebook to an authorized repair provider and have everything cleaned out if that is the case.

Still Nothing? Perform a Clean Install

If everything else fails and nothing seems to be working then it is a good idea to go ahead and perform a clean install of macOS. Save everything to iCloud or on an external drive and then follow the tutorial here for more details.

It is absolutely normal that computers tend to overheat from time to time. But it is best to find out what exactly is causing the overheating in the first place. You never know it might actually be faulty hardware. In that case, just take your notebook straight to Apple for repair or replacement.
