What’s new in Which? magazine: April 2021

Which? magazine is the UK’s bestselling monthly, trusted by more than half a million subscribers. It’s packed with reviews, advice, investigations and news – our aim is to make individuals as powerful as the organisations they deal with in their daily lives.

If you’re not yet a Which? member, we’re offering a sneak peek at the reviews and investigations that are featured in the latest issue.

Which? magazine: April 2021

We think the UK electric-car charging infrastructure is disjointed, confusing and costly. In the latest Which? magazine, Adrian Porter and Karen Lawrence reveal what needs to change in order for the system to support the millions of drivers who’ll soon need it.

The sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned as of 2030 – around 12 million electric cars will be on UK roads by then*. Our look at the future of driving explains what you need to know about electric car costs and highlights five crucial changes needed to make the UK electric car charging network fit for drivers.

Also in this month’s magazine, Yvette Fletcher reports on the best and worst broadband providers. Only one provider in this year’s survey managed to receive above-average ratings for its broadband speed and connection reliability.

With many of us working from home at the moment, broadband has helped us stay in touch with the world outside our homes. In fact, in our survey of more than 4,000 broadband customers in the UK, 71% of respondents told us they used their connection more since the outbreak of the pandemic. Now, it’s more important than ever that your broadband provider is a reliable one – we’ll help you choose wisely.

From the editor

Being conscientious consumers has always meant caring about the impact of our choices on the environment. Our tests have long rewarded reliable and durable products, while our investigative work has regularly focused on sustainability – from plastic in supermarkets to the global problem of electronic waste.

In recent months we’ve upped the ante. We launched Eco Buys to help you choose the greenest products, and these have started appearing in the Test Lab section of this magazine – see washing machines and dishwashers.

We’ve also looked at how to make more environmentally friendly choices when it comes to our diets and we’ll cover more of the big consumer issues, including how we can heat our homes more sustainably, later in the year.

But the onus can’t be on consumers alone, and the issue of driving highlights this perfectly. We know the sale of new petrol and diesel cars is going to be banned in 2030, so we need to get serious about electric. As this month’s cover story shows, however, the infrastructure we need is miles away from being in place. We need the government and companies to do much more to make going electric a realistic and affordable choice.
