Being conscientious consumers has always meant caring about the impact of our choices on the environment. Our tests have long rewarded reliable and durable products, while our investigative work has regularly focused on sustainability – from plastic in supermarkets to the global problem of electronic waste.
In recent months we’ve upped the ante. We launched Eco Buys to help you choose the greenest products, and these have started appearing in the Test Lab section of this magazine – see washing machines and dishwashers.
We’ve also looked at how to make more environmentally friendly choices when it comes to our diets and we’ll cover more of the big consumer issues, including how we can heat our homes more sustainably, later in the year.
But the onus can’t be on consumers alone, and the issue of driving highlights this perfectly. We know the sale of new petrol and diesel cars is going to be banned in 2030, so we need to get serious about electric. As this month’s cover story shows, however, the infrastructure we need is miles away from being in place. We need the government and companies to do much more to make going electric a realistic and affordable choice.
