Premium bond winners in April 2021: where are the luckiest places in the UK?

Two lucky premium bond holders have each won a £1m jackpot in NS&I’s April 2021 prize draw.

The jackpot winners are from Cumbria and Lothian, while five other winners secured the next-best prize of £100,000.

Here, Which? reveals the winning premium bond numbers, and looks at where in the UK has been luckiest in terms of being home to the most jackpot prize winners.

April 2021 premium bond prize winners

This month, the two £1m prizes went to premium bond holders in Cumbria and Lothian.

The Cumbrian winner is a woman, whose winning bond number (323PN679583) was purchased in February 2018 as part of a £50,000 holding.

The winner from Lothian is also a woman, who has held their winning bond number (422PG980526) since November 2020, part of an overall holding of £50,000.

Where are the luckiest places in the UK?

We’ve looked at where every premium bonds jackpot winner has lived over the past five years to see whether some places seem to be luckier than others.

Including April’s results, there have been 10jackpot winners from Kent, making it the luckiest place in the UK. Essex is a close runner-up, being home to seven premium bonds millionaires since April 2016.

The south-east of England is home to the most winners in general, clocking up 27 over the past five years. However, south-west England isn’t doing bad either, with 25 recorded winners – the majority of whom live in Devon, Wiltshire and Dorset.

The map below shows how many winners have been recorded in each area of the UK.

Are some places really luckier?

Looking at the map, it might seem as though some areas are luckier than others – nearly 30 winners in south-east England versus no winners at all in Northern Ireland might suggest this.

But, really, it’s all to do with how many people in each area hold premium bonds – and there are lots of them living in south-east England.

In some cases, it can be difficult to know precisely where premium bond prize winners live, as NS&I only releases a precise location if at least 100,000 other premium bond holders live there – in order to protect the winners’ identity.

That’s why winners are sometimes termed as vaguely living in ‘outer London’, rather than their more specific locations.

This also gives a bit of an insight into the number of premium bond holders in each area; none of the winners in south-east England, for instance, have had to have their location made more vague because there are more than 100,000 other premium bond holders in each area.

But, the premium bond holders who won jackpots in Wales were only described as living in these nations, rather than their specific city or town. With fewer premium bond holders, it makes sense that there are also fewer jackpot winners.
