Windows 10 Services Application Or .msc Files Not Opening Or Responding Issues Can Be Fixed Easily [Learn How To]

Windows 10 Services Application

Windows 10 comes with a variety of built-in applications that make our life easier. These applications are essential for many tasks and allow us to restart services, disable system tasks, manage drivers, etc. Applications like Services Application ( .msc files), Task Scheduler, Disk Management Tool, Event Viewer are essential to the smooth function of the operating system, and you will find yourself using these very often.

How To Open Windows 10 Services Application

The Services application in Windows 10 helps manage Windows Services. Windows Services are applications that run quietly in the background while your computer is on. Sometimes you will need to use the app to modify, enable or disable how services are run. You can use the app to fix service issues. You can access the application in two ways:

WinX Menu

a) Press the Win + X keys to open the WinX Menu. You can also access it by right-clicking on the Windows Start Menu option on your desktop. This is what the WinX menu looks like:

.msc files
b) Select Run.

WinX - Run
c) In the bar in the Run box, write services.msc and press are OK.

.msc files
This should open up the Services app.

Start Menu

Go to the Start Menu and type Services in the Search bar. Click Open.

.msc files
This will also open up the Services app.

This is what the Services app looks like:

Services Application - .msc files

However, if both these methods don’t work and you cannot open the Services application or the application freezes as soon as it opens, there are ways to fix the problem.

Fix Windows 10 Services Application Not Opening

Restart

The first thing that you should always try is to restart or reboot your system. Just go to the Start Menu, click on the Power button, select Restart or Shut down your computer and start it again.

Restart
Microsoft Management Console

The Services app is a .msc file type. It opens with Microsoft Management Console, and there is a possibility that the association between the console and Windows is broken, and the latter doesn’t recognize the file type. To fix this issue, follow the steps below:

a) Go to the Start Menu and click on Settings. (Shortcut Keys: Win + I)

Settings
b) Once the settings open, click on Apps.

Services Application - Settings
c) On the left side of your screen, you will see different options—select Default Apps.

Settings - Default Apps
d) Once the screen opens, scroll down until you reach the very bottom. Select the ‘Choose default apps by file type’ option.

.msc file type
e) There will be a massive list of apps in this section. The file types are listed in alphabetical order. Scroll down till you reach the ‘M’ file types and look for .msc on the left side of the screen.
f) If there is an issue, right next to the .msc file type, there will be a plus button. Click on the plus button and search for Microsoft Management Console in the Microsoft Store and download it. (As you can see in my case Microsoft Management Console is NOT missing; hence there is no plus sign)

.msc files
This will solve the issue.

System Scan

If, however, you still cannot open the Services application, there could be a problem with your system files as well. You can fix this by running System File Checker or sfc.

a) Go to the Start Menu and type Command Prompt in the search bar. Click on Run as administrator.

Command Prompt
b) Once you do, you will be asked, ‘Do you want this app to make changes to your device?' Click Yes.
c) This is what the command prompt looks like:

Admin Command Prompt
Now type sfc/scannow and press Enter.

Services application
d) Allow the command to complete the scan and fix any underlying issues. This can take a while, so be patient. If there are issues, the command will scan them and fix the problems. If there are no issues, this is what you will get after the scan has been completed.

scan complete

e) Now open the Services app and see if the issue persists.

Open Services Application With Admin Rights

a) Go to the Start Menu and search for Command Prompt. Select Run as administrator.
b) You will be asked, ‘Do you want this app to make changes to your device?’ Select Yes.
c) Type this command in command prompt: services.msc and press Enter. This should open the Services application.

Services Application
Fix Services Application In Safe Mode

a) Start your Computer in Safe Mode with Networking Enabled.

  •  Click the Start menu button on your desktop or press the Windows key on your keyboard.
  •  Click the Power option.
  •  Once you do, you will see options including Restart and Shut down. While holding the SHIFT key on your keyboard, click on the Restart option.
  •  The system will reboot, and you will get different options.
  •  Choose Troubleshoot
  •  Then choose Advanced Options
  •  Next, click on Startup Settings
  •  Now press Restart
  •  Once the system reboots, you will be given various startup options
  •  Choose Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter

b) Once you have entered Safe Mode, press the Win + R keys on your keyboard
C) Write services.msc and press Enter.
d) Double-click the Application Information Service option.
e) Now go to the General Tab.
f) In the General Tab, you will see a Startup Type drop-down menu. Select Manual. Once you are done, click OK.

Services Application
g) Exit the Safe Mode by restarting your system.
h) Now try opening the Services app again.

After trying these methods, you will be able to open your Services application or .msc files successfully.
