The Retreat, Haddington, near North Berwick, £122 per night, sleeps 2
Fancy staying in an 18th-century coach house in a historic market town? The seaside isn’t far from Haddington with North Berwick, less than 20 minutes away by car. The East Lothian spot was ranked the sixth best seaside town by Which? readers. Its two sandy bays are rarely crowded and there are plenty of independent shops to explore.
Back at the accommodation you have access to the owner’s garden where you can help yourself to fruit and vegetables. You’ve also got your own patio complete with BBQ. Be aware that while the property has two double bedrooms, the owners restrict access to just two people, or you can an pay extra £50 for a third guest.

Glan Yr Afon, Dolwyddelan, Gwynedd, £156 per night, sleeps five
You can venture off on river walks and forest cycle trails from the front door of this cottage into Snowdonia National Park. Surrounded by open gardens and with a stream that runs past your front door – it really is in the heart of the countryside. For those longing for the Med, Portmeirion is 25 minutes away by car. Here you’ll find Italian style villas and an Art Deco lido in this recreation of a small Italian seaside village on the fringes of Snowdonia.
While the location is immersed in nature, the accommodation itself is rustic with a stone build, quarry tiled kitchen floor and wood burner for cosy nights in. When the weather is kind though, there’s outdoor seating in the open garden to relax in. Be aware that the log burners heat the cottage.
Jake’s cottage, Doxford, near Bamburgh, £198 per night, sleeps 2
Located near the best-rated seaside town in the UK, this ground floor cottage will suit a couple who don’t mind sleeping in single beds or two friends looking for a getaway. The property is just over 10 miles from Bamburgh rated five-stars for scenery and value for money, by Which? readers.
Inside the cottage, you’ll find an L-shaped sofa and TV, ideal for unwinding after a day exploring nearby attractions such as Dunstanburgh Castle. In Airbnb reviews, guests rave about a walk to a nearby lake from the doorstep too, so you don’t need to travel to enjoy the countryside.

Chandlers cottage, Laugharne, near Saundersfoot, £440 per night, sleeps 8
While this cottage may seem expensive, if six adults share (currently allowed within government guidelines) it becomes more affordable at £73 per person per night. That price includes use of the hot tub. Just be aware there’s only room for two cars, so don’t drive separately.
The 18th century accommodation is less than 20 miles from Tenby with its blue flag beaches overlooked by picturesque pastel coloured houses, and 13 miles from stunning Saundersfoot. Inside its kitchen/diner is spacious for nights in and the bathroom features a roll-top bath for soaking.
Chatham, Mawnan Smith, Falmouth, £401 per night, sleeps 8
If you have your eye on something more stately than a cottage for your summer escape, how about this four-bedroom accommodation that sits in the west wing of Bosloe House? It’s the ideal property to share between six people, as the price is £66.76 per person per night. Once settled in, you might not want to leave as there are panoramic views from your accommodation over rolling lawns and the Helford River.
If you do venture out, National Trust’s exotic Glendurgan Garden is less than a mile’s walk from the house. It’ll be free to enter since you’re staying in a National Trust property. If you’re keen to explore a town, Falmouth is less than 20 minutes by car. There sits a picturesque harbour, as well as Gyllyngvase, an arc of sandy beach where you can stretch out on hot summer days.
