Windows Updates are essential for the optimum functioning of your PC. These updates fix bugs in the previous version, update faulty drivers, etc. However, sometimes users complained that the OS didn’t update automatically. There could be various things that caused this issue. However, it is usually fixable. In this tutorial, I will show you how to fix Windows 10 stuck on checking for updates issues.
Fix Checking for Updates
You can fix this issue in different ways, and you can try and check which one works for you.
Restart
This is possibly the easiest solution to try. Often, simply rebooting your PC can fix a stuck screen or a stuck update problem.
Date and Time
If there is an issue with the date and time on your computer, other functions on the PC can be hindered.

- Right-click on the taskbar where you see the date and time.
- Select Adjust date/time
- Turn the toggle switches for Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically On. [If there were already On, turn them Off and then turn them On again]
- Click on Sync now.
Fix Checking for Updates With Better Connection
Sometimes, a bad connection can also cause problems for the Windows updates. Use a different connection like your phone hotspot. Restart your computer and see if using a different connection fixed the stuck Checking for updates issue.
Antivirus
Your installed Antivirus can hinder updates as well. To fix this, you should either disable it for a little bit or update the antivirus. If you update your antivirus, restart your PC and then try updating Windows.

Microsoft Product Update

Step-1: Go to the Start menu and click on the Settings cog. (Shortcut keys: Win + I)
Step-2: Select Update & Security.
Step-3: In the Windows Update tab, select Advanced options.
Step-4: Turn the toggle Off for Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows.
Step-5: Restart your computer and now check for the updates.
Windows Update Service
Step-1: Open the Run box using the shortcut keys Win + R.
Step-2: Type services.msc in the type box and press Enter.
Step-3: When the window opens, scroll down and locate Windows Update. The list is in alphabetical order, so you will have to scroll down a lot.
Step-4: Right-click on it and select Stop.
Step-5: Give it a few minutes and then right-click on Windows Update again click Start.
Fix Checking for Updates by Troubleshooting
- Open Settings using shortcut keys Win + I.
- Select Update & Security.
- You will see a bunch of options on the left pane. Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooter.
- Under the section Get up and running, you will find Windows Update. Click on it.
- Now select Run the troubleshooter
- Wait for the process to complete.
Disk Cleanup
There could be some corrupt files in your system that are preventing Windows from updating. To remove these files, follow the steps below:
Step-1: Go to the Start Menu and type This PC. Click Open.
Step-2: Under the Devices and drives section, right-click on the C drive and select Properties.
Step-3: Select Disk Clean-up.
Step-4: There will be other preselected items in the Files to delete section. Let them be—select Delivery Optimization Files.
Step-5: Press OK.
Step-6: Restart your computer.
