Best Black Friday 2021 deals revealed by Which?

Amazon Black Friday mobile phone deals

Motorola moto g100 – was £449.99, now £349.99 (22% off according to the retailer)

Lowest ever price on Amazon?* Yes

Motorola moto g100

We liked: Solid battery life, speedy processor, durable

We didn’t like: The speakers are average

If you’re shopping for an affordable 5G Android phone, consider adding this Motorola model to your shortlist. It has a sizable 6.7-inch screen, making it well-suited if you enjoy playing games and watching TV on your phone. There are three cameras on the back (including a 64Mp wide lens), plus another two on the front for video calls and selfies.

The Motorola moto g100 is powered by a whopping 8GB of Ram and a Snapdragon 870 5G processor. On paper, that’s more than enough power to cope if you’re running lots of different apps at once. In terms of storage space, you have 128GB to play with.

Lowest ever price on Amazon? Yes

Huawei Watch Fit

We liked: Huge range of activity-tracking features

We didn’t like: Variable pulse oximetry readings

This Huawei wearable has dropped to its lowest-ever price on Amazon in the run up to Black Friday. It’s an entry-level smartwatch that tracks a host of exercise and fitness activities including cycling, running and swimming.

The Huawei Watch Fit has built-in GPS, which means you’ll be able to track your running routes without having a chunky smartphone weighing you down. This model also has a heart-rate monitor and is waterproof up to 50m – you can use swimming mode to track your progress in the pool.

Amazon Black Friday steam iron deals

Tefal GV9580 Pro Express – was £449.99, now £193.99 (57% off according to the retailer)

Lowest ever price on Amazon? No (£179.99 in November 2018)

Tefal GV9580 Pro Express

We liked: Lightweight, resistant to limescale, large water tank

We didn’t like: fiddly to clean

This Tefal steam iron has been included in Amazon’s early Black Friday sale. Although Amazon mentions a 57% saving, we’ve previously seen this model at John Lewis and Robert Dyas for around £280. But a price drop down to £193.99 still equals a tidy 30% discount.

The Tefal GV9580 Pro Express has a continuous steam function, which is designed to iron out heavy creases from all types of fabrics. You have four different ironing settings to choose from, so you can pick the ideal combination of heat and steam for each piece of clothing.

A large 1.9-litre water tank should let you power through more than three hours of ironing without having to refill.

Urbanears Plattan 2 Bluetooth

We liked: Flexible and bendy

We didn’t like: Variable fit, can be tight to wear

Wireless, over-ear headphones that you can control with your voice using Google Assistant on Android or Siri on Apple devices. If you don’t fancy chatting with your headphones, you can use the dial on the right earcup to control your music and phone calls.

These Urbanears headphones feature a foldable design, which means you can tuck them into a bag when you’re done listening to your favourite music.

Black Friday deals on Amazon products

It’s often difficult to predict exactly what will be on sale during the Black Friday period, and how good the discount will be. Some products return consistently year after year, though, and among the most popular are Amazon’s own-brand electronics.

You can bet there will be decent deals on voice assistants, Kindles, Fire TV tech and more both in the run up and on the day. But how do you know when to pull the trigger on a purchase? Read on to see what we’re expecting, and how big we predict the discounts could be.

Amazon Echo smart speaker deals

Typically Amazon offers a good discount on its Alexa smart speakers in the Black Friday sales – expect around 50% off the original retail price in some cases. How much you’ll save depends on the model, and the generation you’re looking for.

Last year, the fourth generation Echo (below) was reduced to £60 (down from £90), but the third generation Echo Dot cost just £18.99 (down from £50).

Our reviews and price predictions:

Amazon Echo (4th gen)

Amazon Echo smart display deals

A more versatile take on a smart speaker is a smart display. With all the trappings of your typical Alexa voice assistant, displays add a visual element so you can make video calls, or watch related content online.

Amazon’s Echo Show range is a bit pricier than its speakers, but there are some good value models available – which we’d expect to be discounted on Black Friday.

Our reviews and price predictions:

Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen)

Amazon Kindle deals

With a recent launch of a new Kindle Paperwhite, Amazon may well be set to offer some of its best discounts on older models. Since the most basic Kindle now includes an all-important front light, you may not find there’s any reason to spend more.

Check our reviews to see which takes your fancy, and strap in and wait for a decent discount.

Our reviews and price predictions:

Amazon Fire tablet deals

If you’re in two minds about buying a tablet, an Amazon Fire device might be just up your street. Running a cut-down version of Android, these are cheap devices that are for the most part pretty cheerful.

There are a range to choose from, and Amazon’s taking the tablet market a bit more seriously with the higher-spec HD 10 (below) from this year, so that could be one to look out for in particular.

Our reviews and price predictions:

Amazon Fire TV Stick deals

If you want to add streaming apps and support for voice control to your TV but don’t fancy spending big, a Fire TV Stick could be a savvy purchase. Amazon sells plug-in Fire TV sticks as well as the Fire TV Cube, which is essentially a cross between a 4K TV streamer and a voice-activated smart speaker.

Last year, we saw the retail giant offering Black Friday discounts on several models including the Fire TV Cube (36% off) and Fire TV Stick with 4K and Alexa (40% off).

Our reviews and price predictions:

Amazon Fire TV Cube

Amazon Ring doorbell deals

Last year, we spotted plenty of Black Friday deals on Ring video doorbells. The Ring Video Doorbell 3, Video Doorbell (2nd gen) and Video Doorbell Pro were all up for grabs at a discounted price. We expect more offers on older doorbells to surface this year considering there’s a newer model out now – the Ring Video Doorbell 4.

But remember that you’ll need a paid subscription to Ring to use all of your doorbell’s key features. Paying for a basic subscription (£2.50 per month at the time of writing) means you can access 30-day video history and save clips to your phone or tablet.

Our reviews and price predictions:

Ring Video Doorbell (2nd gen)

Amazon Blink security camera deals

Amazon will undoubtedly discount its Blink models this Black Friday, which means you could pick up a budget-priced wireless security camera without much hassle.

The most affordable option, the Blink Mini (below), will likely be on sale for around £20. If you’re looking to monitor more than one part of your house, note that the Blink Indoor and Blink Outdoor cameras are also sold as a 2-camera system.

Amazon Black Friday shopping tips

With Black Friday fast approaching, Amazon and many other retailers are promoting ‘early Black Friday deals’. You might be tempted to click that ‘buy’ button as fast as you can before these vanish, but it’s important that you research both the product and the seller – and consider whether the prices are as cheap as they’re going to get.

To help you improve your chances at grabbing a genuinely good deal this Black Friday, consider our expert buying tips.

Stay glued to Which?

As Amazon publishes new deals to its website between now and 27 November, we’ll be digging out the best offers and letting you know if we spot any duds.

It’s not just Amazon we’re keeping an expert eye on, either. Our team of product experts will be working extra hard to bring you the very best Black Friday deals from Argos, Currys PC World and John Lewis & Partners.

You’ll find Black Friday advice, insider tips and tricks on our Black Friday insider’s guide.

Are you buying directly from the manufacturer?

While you’re shopping the Black Friday sales, check whether you’re buying directly from Amazon or a third-party seller – this will potentially affect your rights if there’s a problem or if you need to return an item.

In the example below, we’ve screenshotted an Amazon product page for a Google smartphone. Although the phone is made by Google, this specific item is sold by a third-party seller (circled in red). Amazon will fulfil the order, though, which means it handles customer service and returns.

If you’re buying from a third-party seller that promises to fulfil the order itself, that means delivery, customer service and returns are handled by the seller, not Amazon.

When researching one of Amazon’s third-party sellers, click the brand name to see an overview of customer ratings over the past 12 months.

Watch out for fake reviews

After checking Which? reviews, you might be tempted to have a look at some customer reviews on Amazon to help you make a final decision. Our research and investigations into fake reviews have found that online customer reviews can’t always be trusted, however, so exercise caution.

  • Fakers predictably use five-star reviews to bolster the overall score of their products, so a good way to avoid being misled is to ignore these entirely. Read four-star reviews and below for a more even-handed assessment of the qualities and issues other buyers had with a product.
  • Be wary of product reviews that contain lots of images, particularly if they’re predominantly on five-star reviews. Our previous investigations have found that fake review groups often request that people post multiple pictures or videos alongside a positive review in order to get a refund for the product purchase, so it’s likely that these reviews may have been manipulated.
  • Don’t take Amazon’s Choice at face value. We’ve found that this endorsement can be gamed by unscrupulous sellers, who use clever tactics to find ways around Amazon’s checks. Read more about how Amazon’s Choice can’t always be trusted.
  • A healthy degree of scepticism is your best weapon against fake reviews. If a product has an unusually high number of reviews relative to others in that category, especially if these reviews are overwhelmingly positive, you’d be right to exercise caution.

Shop savvy and read more about how to avoid fake reviews on Amazon in the Black Friday sales.

Customer Q&A can be a helpful resource

One aspect of Amazon’s community-driven review platform that can come in handy is ‘Customer questions & answers’. You’ll find this on the product page, and it’s a good place to look for answers about any specific queries you have about a product.

Know how to spot a good deal

Retailers will be battling extra hard for your attention this month, bombarding you with promises that they’ve got the best deals around. But even if you spot a significant price drop, that particular product you have your eyes on might not be at its lowest-ever price.

In fact, our latest pricing investigation proved that not every Black Friday deal is as good as it seems. We tracked the prices of 220 home and tech products advertised as ‘Black Friday deals’ in 2019 across Amazon, AO.com, Argos, Currys PC World and John Lewis & Partners for six months before and after the event.

After crunching the numbers, we saw that 85% of the products were the same price or cheaper at other times of the year. On top of that, a massive 98% either returned to their Black Friday price in the six months after, or fell to an even lower price.

There are a couple of price-tracking websites that help you see if a product has ever been on sale for less than its current price. CamelCamelCamel can be used to track Amazon price history, while PriceHistory.co.uk focuses on Argos discounts. You could also give PriceSpy a go – it covers a whole range of online retailers.

Returning Black Friday purchases to Amazon

If you buy a product from Amazon during the Black Friday sale and it arrives on your doorstep damaged, the retailer is fully responsible.

According to the Consumer Rights Act, your purchase needs to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If the product doesn’t meet one of these requirements, the retailer (not the manufacturer) is at fault.

But even if your purchase isn’t damaged or faulty, you can still return it under Amazon’s voluntary returns policy. A message on the retailer’s website says: ‘You can return most products from the Amazon sites to Amazon within 30 days of receipt of the products.’

To do so, you’ll need to access Amazon’s ‘returns support centre’ page online.

For more on online returns, faulty goods rights and store returns policies, see our Consumer Rights guide: I want to return my goods, what are my rights?

How to recycle your old tech

If you’re looking to replace some aging technology by shopping the Black Friday sales, make sure you dispose of your old items in the correct way.

There are plenty of ways you can offload your unwanted electronics. One option is kerbside collection for small electrical items – in many cases, your local council will collect smaller items such as toasters and kettles.

Alternatively, you can drop items at a local recycling centre, or hand over your items to retailers that have their own recycling schemes. Appliances Direct, Argos, Currys, Ikea and Robert Dyas all have ways of dealing with your unwanted items.

For more details on how to get rid of your unused gadgets, consult our guide on how to recycle electrical items.
