‘I've been contacted about an investment I never knew I had'

I’ve received a letter from a legal firm asking me to urgently contact an asset management company. The letter claims I am the beneficiary of an investment with a company that is in liquidation. I have no knowledge of having an investment like this and the letter makes no mention of what the failed company was called. Is this a scam?David from Perthshire

'The fact it's a letter doesn't make it genuine'

Michael Tomlinson, Which? Money expert, says...

There is certainly enough here to raise suspicion that this is a scam.

Criminals will ask for your details - which could be used for other scam attempts - and a payment in return for finding your 'lost' investment. Once you part with your money, you'll likely never see them again.

Being contacted out of the blue about an investment should always set alarm bells ringing, even if the language used has an air of authenticity.

The fact that it’s a letter is unusual, but is no indication that it’s more likely to be genuine than an email or phone call.

Even if the law firm and the person the letter is claimed to come from both exist, it doesn’t mean either of them sent the letter to you.

When we searched the telephone number you were given online, we also found several negative reviews. Even if a company’s overall score is good, a high number of one-star reviews is cause for concern.

As you’re not aware of any outstanding investments you own, you agreed that it’s best not to proceed.
