The world-famous holiday destination where your pound will go furthest in 24/25

Cape Town is the best-value destination for a long-haul holiday, according to the Post Office Travel Money’s cost of living barometer.

After adding up the average cost of hotel rooms, meals and other purchases, Cape Town came out cheaper than other popular ‘bargain’ holiday hotspots in Vietnam, Egypt and the Dominican Republic.

A drop in local prices, combined with a weaker South African rand against the pound, means the price of a holiday in Cape Town is now 12% cheaper than in 2023 for Brits. It’s about to become cheaper to get to as well, with budget long-haul airline Norse Airlines launching direct flights to the city.

Just how cheap is Cape Town?

We found you could get a luxury hotel for about the same price as bed and breakfast at a Premier Inn in the UK.

Cape Town’s food and drink was rated the full five stars by visitors of our survey, and you can enjoy fantastic quality at low prices, according to the Post Office report.

A three-course meal for two with a bottle of house wine will set you back around £49 – in contrast, you’ll pay almost double for the same in downtown Dubai (£94). A coffee in Cape Town is just £1.63, on average, while a bottle of local beer is £1.81.

Other great-value cities in the Post Office’s top 10 included Tokyo, Japan; Hoi An in Vietnam; Bali, Indonesia; and Delhi, India.

How much does a Cape Town package holiday cost?

One of the cheapest packages we found with a Which? Recommended Provider tour operator was £1,775 with Hays Travel for eight days. That includes flights, five days in Cape Town and three days on safari at the at Aquila Private Game Reserve on the outskirts of the city.

How much does a Cape Town hotel cost?

Hotel rooms in the city are a steal, costing just £74 a night on average. December to March is the best time to visit for clear skies and sunshine, and to enjoy city beaches like Clifton and Camps Bay.

While prices rise in the run-up to Christmas, you can pick up some great-value accommodation in the new year: January and February hotel prices are just £68 a night, on average.

Our undercover hotel inspector visited the Dorp Hotel last year, when we featured Cape Town in Which? Travel. We were very impressed and awarded it 4.5 stars: ‘A luxury stay in a homely complex of villas set among the guava trees near Bo-Kaap – the colourful Malay quarter – with unparalleled views of Table Mountain.’

Prices in high season are around £200 for a double room with a kitchenette. The rate also includes one of the most opulent breakfast buffets we’ve ever seen. It was a similar price for bed and breakfast at the Premier Inn at London’s Docklands when we checked.

You can easily get a four-star stay in Cape Town for £100, even in high season.

How to get a cheaper flight to Cape Town

Later this month, low-cost Norwegian airline Norse Atlantic will start operating non-stop flights from London to Cape Town. We found fares for under £470, although that doesn't include checked luggage.

What to do in Cape Town?

I visited Cape Town and its surrounds in August last year and found a city unlike any other. In just a few days, I experienced everything from cosmopolitan highlife to the still-raw wounds of its past. There were also otherworldly landscapes, sprinting ostriches and kamikaze baboons.

Cape Town’s major appeal is that it has it all: a thriving city where extraordinary nature is always within reach.

Take the cable car or hike to the top of Table Mountain. Platteklip Gorge is the easiest and most direct trail to the top (around two hours). The views of the city from the summit, set against a perfect crescent of white sand and the shimmering Atlantic sea, are breathtaking. Another must-see is the Cape of Good Hope – a rocky headland on the southern tip teeming with wildlife. You can stop off to meet Boulders Beach’s adorable residents (a colony of African penguins) on the way.

Back in the city, stroll the V&A waterfront for boutique stores and upmarket restaurants. In sharp contrast, the moving District Six Museum, on the other side of the city, pays homage to the mixed-race community forcibly evicted by the apartheid government in the 1970s.
