Safety alert: 17 Hotpoint and Indesit gas cookers may cause a fire

An OPPS (Office for Product Safety & Standards) safety notice identifies 17 freestanding gas cookers with the fault, from brand names Hotpoint and Indesit.

The cookers' glass lids carry the potential risk of a gas leak from the lid shut-off valve caused by repeated use.

Which models are affected by the safety alert?

The alert refers to the following models. You can find your cooker’s model number on a metal plate on the side wall of the cooker cavity.

  • The cookers are a fire risk as it is possible for the O-rings (the rubber seal for the gas shut-off valve) to wear prematurely, causing a gas leak from the lid shut-off valve. If gas leaks and is ignited, this may cause a fire, burns and injuries. 

    If you own one of these models, you should follow the advice of the notice.

    What to do if you own an affected gas cooker

    If you own one of the affected cookers, you should stop using it immediately and contact Hotpoint/Indesit, who will arrange an engineer visit to replace the affected component.

    If you smell gas, you should contact the National Gas emergency helpline on 0800 111 999 in England, Wales and Scotland, and 0800 002 001 in Northern Ireland.
