Best coffee machines of 2020

Best Black Friday deals on Nespresso coffee machines

Nespresso Vertuo Plus by Krups – was £179.99, now £69.99 (61% off, according to Amazon)

Nespresso Vertuo Plus Black Friday coffee machine

We like: Quiet operation

We don’t like: Limited to Nespresso Vertuo capsules

The Nespresso Vertuo Plus is available in a range of colours, but the best deal we’ve seen on it is for the white version – something to bear in mind if you have a certain colour scheme for the small appliances in your kitchen. You’re limited on the type of pods you can use (unlike machines that use standard Nespresso-compatible pods), but the extra bonus with purchasing this deal is that you’ll be able to claim 100 free coffee capsules and two months’ coffee subscription free (1st and 6th months).

Nespresso Vertuo Next Coffee Maker by Magimix – was £143, now £74 (48% off, according to John Lewis)

Nespresso Vertuo Next Black Friday coffee machine

We like: Makes a decent espresso

We don’t like: Can be noisy

This is a relatively new Nespresso machine, a compact version of the Nespresso Vertuo pod machine. It uses the same dome-shaped pods, and makes a wider range of drink sizes using centrifugal technology. While this is a good deal, it was discounted to this price a couple of months ago, so if you’re not in a rush for a coffee machine, you could wait to see if it’s discounted again.

De’Longhi Nespresso Lattissima Touch – was £279.99, now £154.99 (45% off, according to Amazon)

Delonghi Latissima Touch coffee machine black friday

We like: Good espresso and cappuccino

We don’t like: Bit slow to pour out coffee

The Lattissima Touch takes Nespresso Original and Nespresso compatible capsules and has a built-in automatic milk frother for a one-touch brew. It can make a range of coffees including an espresso, long coffee, milky latte, cappuccino, latte macchiato and hot milk. We reckon this deal price is pretty good and it’s the cheapest we’ve seen it.

Best Black Friday deals on Dolce Gusto coffee machines

Dolce Gusto machines tend to be on offer quite regularly, so there’s no need to pounce on a deal, and it’s worth thinking about whether the model on sale has the features you’re keen on. Plus, check our reviews, as some make better coffee than others.

However, you are likely to see some price drops at this time, so if you’re keen on one, it could be a good time to get the best price.

Krups Dolce Gusto Oblo – was £89.99, now £28 (68% off, according to Currys PC World)

Krups Dolce Gusto Oblo Black Friday coffee machine

We like: Good cappuccino

We didn’t like: Drips quite a bit

The Oblo is available in four different colours and uses Dolce Gusto capsules. There’s no steam pipe or milk frother option, but it comes with milk pods for drinks such as cappuccinos. It’s an older model, and we’ve frequently seen it sold for £35 to £50 throughout the year, so this deal isn’t as spectacular as it looks, but £28 is still pretty much as cheap as it gets for this or any coffee machine.

Read our Krups Dolce Gusto Oblo review or buy it now at Currys PC World.

(A recent Which? investigation into Currys PC World suggests the firm has an issue with how it handles complaints about faulty products. So do consider this before making a purchase.)

Nespresso, Tassimo or Dolce Gusto?

Best Black Friday deals on Tassimo coffee machines

As with Dolce Gusto machines, regular price drops are a feature of Tassimo machines, so don’t get swept off your feet by a deal.

Bosch Tassimo Vivy 2 – was £126.93, now £49.99 (61% off, according to Tassimo)

Bosch Tassimo Vivy Black Friday coffee machine deal

We like: Quiet

We didn’t like: Very slow

Coffee machines that use the Tassimo coffee pods can be good for fuss-free milky drinks as they have everything you need in the capsule (as long as you don’t mind milk pods over fresh milk).

Each disc has a barcode that’s read by the machine, and tells it the length, brew time and temperature that’s required. The coffee machine on its own is currently selling for £29.99, which isn’t a particularly special deal – you’ll see it at this price at regular points during the year. However, Tassimo is doing a bundle deal that includes the machine and a range of the T discs for £49.99 which might be worth considering.

Best Black Friday deals on Lavazza coffee machines

Lavazza Tiny – was £59, now £35 (41% off, according to John Lewis)

Lavazza Tiny Black Friday coffee machine

We like: Quiet and compact

We don’t like: Pods are pricier than other coffee types

Tiny by name, tiny by nature – this compact little coffee pod machine is also light enough to move easily around your kitchen if needed. It’s pretty simple – there’s one button that controls the on/off and start/stop function, and it’s also pretty speedy.

It’s dropped in price before, but this is about as cheap as it gets for an espresso machine, and if you’re a fan of Lavazza coffee, it’s a good option. Plus, Lavazza’s pods can be composted via kerbside food recycling services.

Read our Lavazza Tiny coffee machine review or buy it now for £35 from ao.com or the reasonably similar price of £39 from John Lewis.

Lavazza Jolie Coffee Machine – was £79.99, now £49.99 (37% off, according to Lakeland)

Lavazza Jolie coffee machine Black Friday

We like: It’s easy to use

We don’t like: Descaling takes a long time

The Jolie uses Lavazza’s A Modo Mio capsules. The water tank holds 0.6 litres of water and you’ll need to switch off the machine when it’s filled your cup as it doesn’t stop automatically. We’ve spotted the Jolie cheaper in other shops, but stocks had already sold out. However, £49 is still a good deal as it typically retails for around £60 to £70. Read the review to find out if it’s also a good coffee machine.

Lavazza Jolie Plus with Milk Frother – was £128.99, now £64.50 (50% off, according to John Lewis)

Lavazza Jolie Plus and Milk John Lewis

We liked: Easy to use

We don’t like: Cappuccinos aren’t quite as good as with previous models

The Jolie Plus comes with an automatic milk frother so you can make milky coffees, and like the model above, uses the A Modo Mio capsules from Lavazza. There’s no ignoring that this is a big saving – though we’ve seen it on offer at around this price before, this compact capsule espresso machine usually retails at double this price. It’s easy to use and clean, and the milk frother is a nice addition.

For those wanting an authentic coffee experience at home, this is a great deal.

How to buy a coffee machine

The right coffee machine will depend on several factors, and it’s important that you consider these before deciding on the type of machine for you. These include:

  • Your budget – how much are you prepared to spend on your coffee machine? Costs range from £30 to £1,000, but you don’t necessarily need to spend big to get great coffee – we’ve found some pricey models that disappoint, and some cheaper ones that make a brilliant brew.
  • The type of coffee you like to drink – do you like your coffee short, dark and strong? Or long, milky and frothy?
  • The control you want over the coffee-making process. For some, making the coffee is as much a part of the experience as drinking it, while others just want to bung in a coffee pod and press a button.

Once you’ve mulled over these, head to our coffee machine buying guide for more tips on what to consider and how to choose the right machine for you, including our handy quiz.
