Premium bond winners in January 2024 – who and where has the most luck?

Two premium bond holders started the New Year with a bang, after winning the jackpot in January's National Savings & Investments (NS&I) prize draw.

The £1m winners are from Warwickshire and Nottingham, while 91 other winners were picked for the next-best prize of £100,000.

With the odds of winning at their highest since 2008, we looked at winnings data from 2023 to find the luckiest places, age groups, and year for buying premium bonds.

January's premium bond winners

The first winning bond (546JZ698132 ) was bought by a lucky winner living in Warwickshire and is part of a total holding of £20,083. The winning bond was bought in July 2023.

Where were the luckiest places in the UK in 2023?

The map below shows where 2023's premium bond jackpot winners live in the UK.

The East of England saw the most jackpot prize winners in 2023, with a total of five.

Yorkshire and Humberside, the North-West, South-East, South-West, and West Midlands were all equally lucky. Each region had three millionaires last year.

There were no jackpot winners in Wales, Northern Ireland or the North-East.

Luckiest age groups in 2023

Premium bond holders over the age of 65 bagged the most prizes last year, according to NS&I data. They won a total of 33,703,114 prizes, worth almost £2.5bn. The age group least likely to win were aged under 16. In 2023, child premium bond holders won 1,068,856 prizes worth a total of £77,620,125.

The oldest age group also had the most jackpot winners, with 12 over 65s becoming millionaires last year. They were followed by the second-oldest group of premium bond holders - the 45 to 64-year-olds - which had eight jackpot winners among them in 2023.

While there were three jackpot winners from the 25-44 age group, sadly no-one under the age of 24 was lucky enough to win £1m.

Of course, the higher number of jackpot winners in older age groups is not simply down to luck. Savers in this demographic tend to have more money to invest in premium bonds. And the bigger the holding, the greater your chances of winning a prize are.

Luckiest year for buying premium bonds

The chart below shows the year all premium bonds chosen for a jackpot prize in 2023 were purchased.

The graph shows that the majority of premium bond numbers that won £1m in 2023 were bought within the last five years. Both 2020 and 2022 boasted the most jackpot prize-winning purchases - a total of four lucky numbers were bought in each year.

Amazingly, one £1m winner from the August 2023 draw had bought their ticket just a few months before in April 2023.

With all of last year's jackpot-winning numbers bought after 2000, does that mean newer bonds are luckier? There are a couple of likely reasons for more recently bought bonds winning big.

One major factor to bear in mind is that up until a couple of years ago, savings rates elsewhere were very low. As a result, more people were likely to choose premium bonds - with their promise of big cash prizes - over traditional savings accounts or Isas which offered poor returns.

While savings rates were already climbing in 2022, a boost to the prize fund rate twice during the year may have enticed people to buy more premium bonds.

In fact, all £1 bonds that enter the prize draw each month have an equal chance of being picked.
