This summer’s cheapest package holiday destinations

Three Greek islands are currently the cheapest destinations for a package holiday this summer, according to Which? Travel’s analysis of more than 4,500 holidays that are still available to book.

Those booking now will also find some of the cheapest package prices on Spain’s Costa Brava and Italy’s Amalfi Coast - usually considered to be expensive. All are currently cheaper, on average, than traditionally good value destinations such as Bulgaria and Turkey.

If you’re looking for a bargain, steer clear of the south of France this summer, where the average price per person for a package holiday, including flights, is £1,637pp. You’ll save £660pp, on average, by heading for the Amalfi Coast instead.

Is the Amalfi Coast really cheap for a holiday?

The Amalfi Coast is not a destination associated with a bargain holiday, although it is a big region, and there are certainly cheaper places than the famous Positano.

But the reason it is one of the cheapest places for a package holiday is primarily because of the range of accommodation available; the Amalfi Coast has plenty of room-only, self-catering and bed and breakfast accommodation (rather than pricier all-inclusive or full board packages) still available, which means prices are lower on average. There are also lots of budget flights to the region.

Our research compared prices in 70 regions of 15 European countries served by the UK’s two biggest tour operators, Jet2holidays and Tui, to find the most affordable destinations in the second week of the school summer holidays - the peak of the high season.

What about all-inclusive holidays?

Using the same data, we’ve also looked at the cheapest destinations for an all-inclusive holiday this summer.

If you want to pay more upfront to control costs while you’re away, you’ll find that Tenerife offers great value, as does the Costa Blanca in Spain and Dalaman in Turkey.

The 10 cheapest package holiday destinations overall

Kalymnos cheapest summer package holiday

This summer’s cheapest package holiday destination: Kalymnos

Tiny Kalymnos is a lesser-known Dodecanese island with secluded coves, sapphire seas, rugged mountains (favoured among the climbing community) and lots of excellent restaurants in its main resorts of Kantouni, Massouri, Myrties and Pothia.

The whitewashed capital, Pothia, facing out into the Aegean, is a bargain (the cheapest holiday we found was £794pp), but the most popular beach is at Massouri (£856 on average).

Kalymnos is a 40-minute boat ride from Kos (transfers included in the holiday price), which adds to its sense of seclusion.

Spain’s cheapest package holiday destination: Costa Brava

The stretch of coast north of Barcelona, known for its sweeping golden beaches, craggy cliff tops and tucked-away coves, offers fantastic value, particularly the resorts of Calella, Malgrat de Mar, Pineda de Mar and Santa Susanna, sometimes collectively called the Costa Barcelona.

Malgrat de Mar, with its promenade of beachfront bars, Blue Flag beach, and easy access to Barcelona, costs just £839pp on average - £120pp cheaper than its brasher and better-known neighbour Lloret de Mar.

Cheapest package holiday Amalfi Coast Minori

Italy’s cheapest package holiday destinations: Venetian Riviera and Amalfi Coast

Purpose-built beach resort Lido di Jesolo on the edge of Venice Lagoon has more than nine miles of safe, sandy shoreline that’s great for families, and within easy reach of Venice. It’s also a bargain this summer at just £965pp on average. But it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, with its traditional amusements, lively nightlife and themed pubs.

The stylish Amalfi Coast with its picture-perfect whitewashed villages and spectacular coastal scenery might be a better bet. The low-key resorts of Minori and Maiori are less crowded (and cheaper) than their glamorous neighbours to the west of Amalfi and offer bargain rates this summer. On average, you’ll pay £915 in Maiori.

This summer’s cheapest all-inclusive destinations

All-inclusive holidays are enjoying a surge in popularity as we all seek to control our spending. The theory is that if you’ve paid for everything in advance, there’s no need to worry that costs will snowball when you arrive.

Where you go also makes a big difference. Tenerife is this summer’s cheapest destination for an all-inclusive package, and on average, it’s £502pp cheaper than this year’s priciest all-inclusive location, Halkidiki in northern Greece (£1,599pp).

Five cheapest all-inclusive holiday destinations

Costa Adeje Tenerife cheapest all-inclusive

This summer’s cheapest all-inclusive holiday destination: Tenerife

While most people think of the Canaries for winter sun, the islands have consistent year-round temperatures and offer an escape from the oppressive heat of the Spanish mainland in August. Both Tenerife and Fuerteventura are offering excellent all-inclusive rates this summer.

Our research

We gathered the prices of 4,558 package holidays from the UK’s biggest tour operators – Jet2holidays and Tui – in March 2024. The countries we looked at were Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Portugal, Spain (including the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands), Turkey and the Channel Islands.

The average price is for a seven-night holiday including flights, departing on or around 3 August, based on two people sharing a standard double or twin room. We only included destinations with a minimum availability of holidays, we removed any major cities from the results to focus on resort areas, and not all destinations were on sale with both Jet2 and Tui.
