'I claimed on my car insurance while renewing it, and the price has risen again'

I’ve been with the same insurer for 10 years and wasn’t impressed to get a renewal notice of £820 in March – £302 up on last year. I grudgingly accepted this but then due to a minor accident my insurer has increased my premium again by £184. Is this right?A Which? Money member

'The insurer is allowed to raise your price, but you can push back'

Simon Dicey, Which? Money expert, says...

Unfortunately, as the accident happened just before your renewal, the insurer is allowed to factor this into the new premium.

This applies even though the incident wasn’t your fault, and you have a substantial no-claims discount (NCD).

Your NCD is unlikely to be affected by a no-fault claim but it’s ultimately just a percentage discount on the premium, which insurers can, and frequently do, increase.

Some insurers feel that even minor incidents and no-fault claims means that you are statistically more likely to submit a fault claim within the next year.

But that shouldn’t stop you from pushing back.

You made a formal complaint and your insurer refunded half the increase to you as a gesture of goodwill.
